Planetary embryo collisions and the wiggly nature of extreme debris discs

چکیده

In this paper, we present results from a multi-stage numerical campaign to begin explain and determine why extreme debris disk detections are rare, what types of impacts will result in disks can learn about the parameters collision disks. We by simulating many giant using smoothed particle hydrodynamical code with tabulated equations state track escaping vapour collision. Using an $N$-body code, simulate spatial evolution generated dust post-impact. show that release anisotropically not isotropically as has been assumed previously distribution resulting is dependent on mass ratio impact angle addition, anisotropic post-collision cause formation or lack short-term variation flux depending orientation respect orbit around central star. Finally, our suggest there narrow region semi-major axis where would be observable for any significant amount time implying most observed often but does mean collisions occurring.

Discs and Planetary Formation

The formation, structure and evolution of protoplanetary discs is considered. The formation of giant planets within the environment of these models is also discussed.

Vertical structure of debris discs

Context. The vertical thickness of debris discs is often used as a measure of these systems’ dynamical excitation, and as clues to the presence of hidden massive perturbers such as planetary embryos. However, this argument might be flawed because the observed dust should be naturally placed on inclined orbits by the combined effect of radiation pressure and mutual collisions. Aims. We criticall...

Formation of planetary debris discs around white dwarfs II: Shrinking extremely eccentric collisionless rings

The formation channel of the tens of compact debris discs which orbit white dwarfs (WDs) at a distance of one Solar radius remains unknown. Asteroids that survive the giant branch stellar phases beyond a few au are assumed to be dynamically thrust towards the WD and tidally disrupted within its Roche radius, generating extremely eccentric (e > 0.98) rings. Here, we establish that WD radiation c...

Atomic gas in debris discs

We have conducted a search for optical circumstellar absorption lines in the spectra of 16 debris disc host stars. None of the stars in our sample showed signs of emission line activity in either Hα, Ca II or Na I, confirming their more evolved nature. Four stars were found to exhibit narrow absorption features near the cores of the photospheric Ca II and Na I D lines (when Na I D data were ava...
